Khor Kalba Mangrove Park Sharjah / Sharjah / Exploring the UAE

We visited the Khor Kalba Mangrove Park in Sharjah and were struck by how peaceful and unique the setting feels. Walking through the reserve, we experienced the ever-changing mangrove landscape shaped by the tides, with calm waters, rich birdlife, and a strong sense of untouched nature. It’s a refreshing escape and a great place to connect with one of the UAE’s most important coastal ecosystems.

Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre

This remarkable project forms an important part of Sharjah’s wider commitment to protecting environmental biodiversity and safeguarding its native wildlife for future generations.

Set along the coast of Kalba, the park is home to a unique and thriving mangrove ecosystem, one of the oldest natural habitats of its kind in the region. Here, freshwater from inland streams and lakes meets the saltwater of the sea, creating a rare and delicate environment where mangroves can flourish.

The landscape is shaped by the rhythmic ebb and flow of the tides, meaning the terrain continuously transforms: at times the roots and mudflats lie exposed, while at others they are partially submerged beneath the water.

Learning about the mangrove ecosystem

From the parking lot, we were able to take a golf cart to the park entrance. We entered the visitor center, a beautiful building carefully designed to teach about the mangrove ecosystem.

We viewed the interactive exhibition explaining how mangroves survive in the unique mix of salt and fresh water, along with displays about the animals that depend on this habitat – from fish and crabs to birds such as kingfishers and herons.

There is also a small aquarium section, where we could spot various fish species and other animals living in this mangrove, such as small fish, crabs, and sometimes even loaches. It helps to understand how rich life is among the roots of the mangrove trees and provides a more complete picture of this unique habitat.

Boardwalk route

After the indoor section, we went to explore the outdoor park. We walked across a wooden bridge into the mangrove forest.

In the forest, we are guided over beautifully constructed wooden boardwalks. The raised wooden paths wind gently through the mangroves, allowing you to dive deep into the habitat without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. During our walk, we were surrounded by winding trees, shallow waterways, and the gentle sounds of nature.

Here and there, viewing platforms have been created along the route where you can easily pause for a moment to take in the landscape.

Bird watching

It is also an excellent place for birdwatching. The mangrove forests offer a sanctuary for diverse species, and if you take your time, you will see birds moving among the branches, wading through the shallow water, or soaring above you. With a little patience, and perhaps binoculars, you can spot both resident and migratory birds, making the experience even more valuable.

The bird hides along the wooden paths are perfect for viewing the birds up close without disturbing them—ideal for quiet observation or photography.

There are surprisingly many different bird species to spot, such as herons (see image below), garzettas, and the larger Ardea alba, which find rest in the shallow brackish water.

Wanderers such as Calidris nebularia and Calidris ferruginea often forage along the muddy banks, especially during the migration season. We also saw a number of flamingos standing in the lagoons.

One of the most special species here is the white-throated kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis). This striking bird, with its bright blue wings and chestnut-brown breast, often sits still on a branch above the water, waiting to dive for small fish.

Turtle area

There’s also a small turtle area where we could observe turtles while learning about their life cycle, and how turtles are protected in the region, the dangers of pollution and habitat loss, and what efforts are being made to support their survival. A great addition to the visit, especially for the children.

We concluded our visit by having fun playing in the natural playground at the visitor center.

All in all, the park offers an educational and visually appealing glimpse into one of the most important coastal ecosystems of the UAE, making it a wonderful destination for families and nature lovers.
