Desert Camping

Desert camping is special because of the spectacular sunsets and sunrises that you rarely experience anywhere else. Sleeping under a sky full of stars, away from urban life, makes it a unique and peaceful adventure.

Occasionally, we like to kick off the weekend or a public holiday with a trip into the desert—sometimes just for a few hours of driving and relaxing, and other times with a full camping setup for the night. One of the great advantages of living in the Mira

Community is that the desert is practically in our backyard. Within minutes, we can leave the neighborhood behind and find ourselves surrounded by wide open dunes and the quiet beauty of the desert landscape.

From certain spots in the dunes, you can even see the distant skyline of Dubai rising on the horizon, including the iconic Burj Khalifa. Watching the sunset there, with the golden sand stretching out in every direction and the city skyline glowing in the distance, is always a special moment.

On weekends, there’s an extra highlight. At 9:00 pm, the fireworks from Global Village light up the sky, and from the right vantage points in the desert we can actually enjoy the show from afar.

These desert outings have become one of our favorite ways to unwind, explore, and spend time together. Whether we’re driving across the dunes, setting up camp, or simply enjoying the quiet of the desert night, every trip brings a bit of adventure and a lot of fun.

Here are some photos capturing a few of those trips. The drone footage was filmed by Dinand, giving a beautiful aerial perspective of the desert and our little adventures there.

The Camp...

Often, we try to arrive at a nice spot in the desert before sunset so we can set up our camp in time. Once we find the perfect place, our little camping routine begins: we set up the tent, roll out the mattresses, and prepare the sleeping bags.

After that, we place the chairs and take out some food and supplies for the evening. And of course, the most important element cannot be missing: the campfire.

While the sun slowly disappears behind the dunes and the sky turns into beautiful warm colors, we light the fire. That moment—when everything is ready, the fire starts crackling, and the quiet of the desert settles in—always makes camping in the desert a truly special experience.

When the campfire is glowing, we often prepare hot dogs or another simple snack over the fire, and afterwards we roast some marshmallows. After that, it’s time to crawl into our sleeping bags and head to bed.

Camping in the desert usually means we wake up early as well—often right around sunrise. As the first light appears over the dunes and the desert slowly comes to life again, it’s a beautiful and peaceful way to start the day.

The next morning

The sunrise is a beautiful spectacle, especially when enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or tea. Meanwhile, the kids often play a bit more in the sand, making the most of the early morning in the desert.

After breakfast, we pack up our things and head back home. It’s always quite a task to get all the camping gear completely free of sand before the next trip! But despite that, these desert outings are incredibly relaxing and always well worth the effort.
