Wadi Al Munay Hike

December 2021

Today, we set out on a beautiful hike in Ras Al Khaimah, just about an hour’s drive from our home. Our destination was one of the region’s scenic wadis—dry riverbeds that cut through the rugged Hajar Mountains and transform dramatically after rainfall.

After crossing the dam at the entrance, we drove a bit further into the wadi and parked alongside a handful of other cars, a sign that this hidden spot is quietly popular with fellow explorers. From there, the landscape immediately opened up—wide gravel beds, scattered boulders, and towering rock walls on either side gave us a sense of just how vast and untouched the area is.

The Hike

We began our hike, covering roughly 4.5 kilometers. At one point, we opted for a more adventurous shortcut, climbing over a rocky ridge that separates two wadis. This gave us a different perspective of the landscape—wide, open valleys framed by jagged mountains, with layers of rock revealing the geological history of the area. Wad is like this are typically dry for most of the year, but they play an important ecological role, channeling rare rainwater and supporting pockets of plant and animal life when conditions allow.

The weather was absolutely perfect—clear skies, mild temperatures, and a gentle breeze—ideal for taking our time, soaking in the views, and enjoying a relaxed picnic along the way. Although there was no water in the dam or along the wadi floor this time, we could easily imagine how different it must look after rainfall, when pools form and the landscape briefly turns lush (as seen in Wadi Al Munay after rain).

Even without water, the stark beauty of the terrain made the hike incredibly rewarding. The silence, the scale of the mountains, and the sense of remoteness gave us a real appreciation for this lesser-known side of the UAE.

To round off the day, we headed toward Mleiha, where we stopped at the charming Mheila Café. Located within the Mleiha Archaeological Centre, the café was the perfect place to unwind with a drink and some snacks, reflecting on a day well spent exploring nature, history, and the quiet beauty of the Emirates.

The reward: Mheila Café

A lovely place to finish this day.... (close to Fossil Rock).
