Wadi Naqab Ras-al-Khaimah
January 2023
Wadi Naqab, located in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, is one of the most rewarding hikes in the northern UAE, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Hajar Mountains.
Today we decided to do the Wadi Naqab hike in Ras Al Khaimah. We had an early start and drove from Dubai to Wadi Naqab which is fairly straightforward and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and your exact starting point.
As we approached Ras Al Khaimah, we followed signs toward the city center, then continued in the direction of Wadi Naqab. The last part of the drive took us off the main highway and into smaller local roads that lead toward the foothills of the Hajar Mountains. Here, the landscape is changing quickly, from flat desert to rocky terrain and rising mountains.
The final stretch is along a gravel or uneven track leading into the wadi itself. A regular car can usually make it in dry conditions, but a 4x4 is recommended, especially after rain when the roads be soft or washed out. Once we arrived, we parked near the entrance of the wadi, where the hike begins right from the valley floor.
The hike
The trail started through a wide wadi bed scattered with massive boulders, shaped over centuries by seasonal floods. Walking here feels like moving through a natural corridor of rock, quiet, rugged, and raw.
As we progressed deeper into the wadi, the terrain gradually becomes more challenging, eventually leading to a steep, ancient stone stairway carved into the mountainside.
These steps, believed to have been used by local inhabitants for generations, climb sharply toward the plateau above. The ascent is demanding but incredibly rewarding, offering ever, expanding views with every step.
Bat cave
Before reaching the top, there’s a fascinating detour: a small bat cave hidden among the rocks. A short scramble over rocks brought us right to its entrance, where we stepped inside and experienced a completely different atmosphere, cool, dark, and echoing with the subtle movements of its winged residents.
From here, we continued on to the plateau that this route is known for.
This was still quite a challenging climb, along—at times—very narrow ledges. Once you reach the pancake layered plateau, you won’t believe your eyes—absolutely stunning.
Pancake layered plateau
On the plateau, the view stretches across the rugged landscape, with layers of mountain peaks fading into the distance.
We took a moment to let it sink in and enjoyed the beautiful view, where we could have stayed all day.
We walked the same way back to the car. A friendly goat was waiting for us there.
The hike through Wadi Naqab is quite a physical challenge; but the geological phenomena you encounter along the way, and the view of the plateau, make this hike an absolute must if you love extreme nature.
