The Swifah Trail Khorfakkan

November 2021

We set out on a day trip to Khorfakkan to hike the Swifah Trail, looking forward to a quiet escape into rugged coastal mountains. With clear skies and the sea in view, it felt like the perfect short adventure.

The Swifah Trail

Swifah Trail in Khorfakkan is a short, but visually striking coastal hike that combines rugged mountain terrain with expansive sea views. Although relatively modest in distance, it offers a surprisingly diverse landscape and a sense of isolation that’s increasingly rare in the region. Despite its short length, the trail feels more substantial due to the terrain and elevation changes.

The trail markings

The trail markings along the Swifah route were fairly minimal. In some sections we found faint painted markers and occasional cairns, but overall the path was not consistently signposted. Most of the time we relied on following the most worn tracks in the terrain and checking our GPS to stay on course, especially at intersections where multiple paths seemed to branch off.

Khorfakkan Heart Beach

Via the Swifah Trail, you can walk all the way to Khorfakkan Heart Beach. The path leads you along the ridge toward the coast and eventually brings you out near the beach. Keep in mind that the final section may be less clearly marked, so having a map or GPS is helpful to find the correct descent.

Winter season is on

The winter season in the UAE has begun, so we decided to take a fun family day trip to Khorfakkan, where we had a challenging hike in mind.

We chose the Swifah Trail, a route of about 3 kilometers one way, making it a 6-kilometer round trip. The trail begins at a small parking area along the S104 road on the northern side of town (Google Maps: 7HQR98HX+8Q).

Start form parking

From the parking area, we started the route. The path climbs steadily from near sea level to higher ridgelines, with intermittent steeper sections that require careful footing. The elevation gain isn’t extreme, but it was enough to raise our heart rate and rewarded us with increasingly wide views over the coastline.  We had to pause occasionally to catch our breath.

Khorfakkan Heart Beach

Via the Swifah Trail, you can walk all the way to Khorfakkan Heart Beach. We didn’t go all the way; instead, we turned back at the highest point. In total we walked about 3–3.5 km, but with all our stops for eating, photos, relaxing, enjoying and drone footage, the hike still took us around 2.5 hours.

Rocks and gravel

Environmentally, we found the Swifah Trail sitting right at the intersection of mountains and sea, which gave it a stark, almost otherworldly feel. The landscape around us was dry and exposed, with very little vegetation apart from scattered hardy shrubs.

The ground was mostly rock and gravel, and the lack of greenery really amplified that raw, 'moon-like' appearance we noticed along the way. Combined with the silence and the absence of other hikers, it gave us a strong sense of remoteness, even though we weren’t far from town.

Part of Hajar range

Geologically, we found the trail particularly interesting. The mountains here are part of the Hajar range and consist largely of ancient ophiolite sequences, rocks that originally formed deep in the Earth’s oceanic crust and were later pushed upward. This results in dark, dense, and heavily weathered formations that are often fractured and jagged.

In some places, we noticed the rocks appearing layered or folded, while in others they broke into sharp, angular fragments underfoot. The way light and shadow played across these formations, especially in the early morning, gave the terrain a dramatic, almost extraterrestrial feel, something that became even more striking when seen from our drone footage.

The views

The views opened up beautifully: to one side, we could look down over Khorfakkan Beach, with its long stretch of sand and turquoise water. Offshore, Shark Island stood out as a small but distinctive landmark, popular with boaters and snorkelers. We could also spot Khorfakkan Port, which added an interesting industrial contrast to the otherwise natural coastal panorama.

In summary

One of the things we appreciated most about the Swifah Trail was how quiet it is. Even on weekends, we were able to hike for long stretches without meeting anyone else, which really added to the feeling of exploration. The mix of moderate physical challenge, unique geology, and sweeping coastal views made it a very rewarding hike—especially for a route that still feels a bit off the usual tourist paths in the UAE.

Lunchtime

We had lunch in the old souk (area) in Khor Fakkan. The restaurant was called, The Coffee Address and it was really a good stop for lunch. After the lunch, we bought two coffees and two (fresh) milkshakes at Rumailah Farm (drive through). What a lovely concept.
