Ras al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary - Flamingo Park
February 2020
Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is a remarkable nature reserve located just a short distance from the heart of Dubai.
This protected wetland area lies where the waters of Dubai Creek meet a network of shallow lagoons, mudflats, and mangrove patches, creating an important habitat for wildlife in the middle of a rapidly growing city.
To observe the birds without disturbing them they created several well-designed bird-watching hides scattered around the sanctuary. To reach these quiet viewing shelters, we walked along simple open-air paths and through small tunnels that lead toward the wetlands, allowing visitors to observe the wildlife while remaining hidden from the birds. From inside the hides, large observation windows provide the perfect vantage point for photography and birdwatching. The sanctuary is especially famous for its large population of flamingos.
During the cooler months, hundreds—sometimes thousands—of these elegant, long-legged pink birds gather in the lagoons, creating a spectacular natural scene.
Watching them wade gracefully through the shallow water, feed, and occasionally take flight together is a beautiful sight.
One of the most striking aspects of visiting the sanctuary is the dramatic contrast between nature and city: we watched the flamingos peacefully moving through the wetlands, the modern skyline of Dubai rises in the background—a powerful reminder of how wildlife and urban life coexist here. Despite being so close to the city’s busy roads and towering buildings, the sanctuary feels wonderfully calm.
The quiet atmosphere, the gentle sounds of birds and water, and the wide open views of the wetlands make it a peaceful escape from the bustle of Dubai. For us, the tranquility and natural beauty of the sanctuary made the visit absolutely worthwhile.
